From a young age, I aspired to become a dog trainer. Over the years, I've worked with various breeds and currently own two Australian Shepherds, Koda and Navy, who have proudly qualified for Crufts . They are now training in agility and scent . My extensive hands-on experience has revealed my innate talent for understanding and communicating with dogs. Recently, I completed the Scent Hurdles UK instructor course—an exciting new dog sport making its debut in the UK. Additionally, I hold several qualifications, including a diploma in dog behavior, a Scent Work Trainer certification, and expertise in canine body language. I’ve also achieved level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work and am a certified ProTraining Pet First Aid Instructor. I am truly living my dream by empowering dogs and their owners with essential skills for modern life, utilizing contemporary training techniques for the dogs of the future.

Well where do I begin !!! I shall start with our wonderful trainer Kay who has supported me to train my first Rottweiler puppy Douglas who loves Kay immensely, Douglas would jump through hoops for Kay , Kay guided me to train Douglas only using positive reinforcement which he works well for , Douglas thrived and was developing into
A very well balanced dog however after a rather large bull dog attempted to attack him Douglas became most fretful out on walks and most defensive and commenced in barking and lunging at other dogs this was most upsetting , however Kay supported me in rectifying problem immediately and Kay introduced strategies for myself to support Douglas within a week of repeating said strategies Douglas is back to his normal self a happy teenager this was such a relief to see him back to his laid back self , my story doesn’t end here we acquired another Rottweiler puppy which wasn’t really planned and I was terrified how on earth would I cope with a puppy and a puppy transitioning into adolescence ? The first few months felt very hard and at times I was shattered and experienced strong feelings of guilt towards Douglas believing I couldn’t give him my full attention. Again Kay supported me emotionally and supported my pups , Kay reinforced constantly ‘you got this hun ‘ offered loads of advice for myself , Douglas and Lenny . My class peers have also supported me immensely. I was concerned I could not manage to train both pups at same time , Kay alleviated my worries and Kay and I take turns in training both puppies at same time in same class , Kay does this whilst running her class ! The wonderful people I train with Alan, Alison , and Zoe are always there to lend a hand when required because our class is full of nurturing individuals . I am accustomed to having the two now and to be fair I am enjoying every moment of my boys , Lenny is now 5 months and Douglas is 19.5 months old and both are thriving and love attending class .I would like to strongly express qualifications for dog training is obviously required to train owners and their dogs but Kay is not just text book theory our Kay has innate special qualities that cannot be taught I believe it’s just a gift !!! I will always attend training I believe this will be an ongoing process for my boys and I would have no one other than Kay support myself , Douglas and Lenny .
I’ve been with Top Dog Training for nearly three years now, and WOW… what an adventure we’ve been on with Blubell! 🐾
When I first started with Kay, I honestly wasn’t sure how far we were going to get. Blubell was absolutely petrified of traffic and couldn’t keep a lead or collar on when she was scared. Fast-forward nearly three years and I can now safely walk her close to 99% of roads. That is something I genuinely never thought I’d be able to say!
And yes, I’m taking the credit for approximately 1% of it… the other 99% is all Kay! 😂
Kay is absolutely amazing and genuinely knows her stuff. She works at your dog’s pace, never rushes or forces anything, and uses positive reinforcement throughout. She somehow manages to understand what is going on inside their little heads — something I’m still trying to achieve with Blubell! 😂
Blubell has gone from strength to strength with Kay, and it really shows in how she — and all the other dogs — respond to her. There is such a lovely bond between Kay and the dogs. Blubell absolutely adores her.
She loves all of Kay’s classes, from 1-to-1 training, scent detection and hurdles to group walks. We don’t train in a hall or on in a field; we train in the real world, which makes such a difference. Our 1-to-1 sessions have taken us to cafés, shops, pet shops and all sorts of places.
Now, I said Blubell is well behaved… and she is! But she definitely wasn’t always like that. 😂
She used to bark. And when I say bark, I mean BARK! She had opinions and she wasn’t afraid to share them with everyone within approximately a five-mile radius. There were times in classes when I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me because I was convinced everyone was thinking, “Oh great… she’s here.” 😂
Thankfully, with Kay’s amazing help, it’s now very rare.
Although, we still have one little problem…
If Blubell sees Kay, she likes to announce our arrival.
Very loudly.
Apparently, walking into class quietly is beneath her. 😂
We’re still working on that one!
I’ve even taken Blubell camping with friends on my own, despite never having taken a dog camping before. I have to say, I was absolutely amazed at how well she coped. It was a real test of everything we’d worked on together, and she did amazingly well.
When I first started with Kay, I genuinely didn’t think I’d get this far with Blubell, let alone achieve everything we have so far. The difference is incredible, and I’m so proud of her — even if she does occasionally remind me that she is still very much in charge! 😂
Top Dog isn’t just dog training. It’s family, support, encouragement, laughter and a whole load of muddy paws. Everyone supports each other, and you never feel like you’re doing this alone.
And it’s not just the dog training either. Top Dog also offers pet first aid courses, which I’m really proud to have completed.
When I first got Blubell, pet first aid was one of the things I really wanted to learn. I didn’t know anyone who ran the courses, and I even asked my vets if they knew of any. Then I found out Kay was going to run one — so obviously I jumped at the chance!
The course is recognised and lasts for three years, so it’s definitely worth doing. Hopefully I’ll never need to use what I’ve learned, but it’s reassuring to know I have the knowledge if I ever need it.
Three years ago, I had a dog who was terrified of traffic, hated having a lead or collar on and had a bark that could probably be heard from space.
Now I have a dog who can walk safely near roads, go to cafés and shops, go camping, take part in scent work and hurdles, enjoy group walks… and still loudly announce when she has arrived to see Kay! 😂🐾
I honestly can’t thank Kay and Top Dog Training enough for everything they’ve done for both of us.
It’s been an amazing journey, and I can’t wait to see what we get up to next.
Although, knowing Blubell, she’ll probably announce it before I do! 😂❤️🐾
Kay has helped us with Percy out White Swiss Shepherd Dog. At about a year old he started getting reactive with other dogs and was pulling on the lead and barking. He is a big strong dog and I began losing my confidence when walking him. Kay helped with some one to one sessions. We changed harness so I had control of his head and we bought a lead letting us change the length to suit the circumstances.
Kay is brilliant at deciphering and explaining Percy's body language and helped me to understand why he was reacting. She taught me at change my own body language to make Percy feel confident that I was in charge. He has made remarkable progress and I am do grateful to Kay. She has given me my confidence back and I am not worried about seeing other dogs when we go for a walk. Kay has a gentle was of instructing us humans who need to know why things are not working and showing us how to bond with our dogs in a positive and beneficial way.
I have been bringing my poodle, Teddy, to classes with Kay since he was just a few months old. He is a rescue, abandoned at one day old, and hand reared, so he came to me with no idea how to behave, how to play, or how to socialise. To start, he was a bundle of issues - scared of everything, wary of people, couldn't be touched and had no idea how to behave. Over the past 2 years, with such amazing help from Kay, Teddy has blossomed into a confident, happy and loving boy. Kay's scent classes have really brought out the best in Teddy - it's his favourite thing in the world, and you can see the concentration in him when he's searching, and the joy when he's running back with his retrieved object. I can't thank Kay enough for all the love and patience she has for our dogs. She's much more than a trainer, she's a friend and confidante. I cannot recommend her highly enough
Myself and puppy Rottweiler Douglas joined the wonderful trainer Kay in August . The reason we joined is because I met a wonderfully behaved dog at the seafront with its owner who said the dog was so well behaved as had been to top dog I immediately telephoned Kay when I got home as I wanted Douglas to be as well mannered . To be fair I feel it was myself that required training and Kay facilitated that and continues to do so Kay has been an absolute rock through difficult times and has been accommodating through changes and has adapted to our needs . Kay is very calm and goes without say most talented and it is evident that ALL puppies and dogs that attend adore her as do we humans . Top dog feels like an exclusive community and Douglas and I love attending . Douglas was quite a handful as puppies can be but because of his size could be very overbearing to say the least !!! However as his training has progressed he has made to my mind made great progress and I feel very proud of his behaviour . Kay teaches only positive reinforcement and Douglas thrives on this . Kay works endlessly to enlighten us all on diet , enrichment as well as teaching us humans how to help us reach our puppies and dogs best potential . It is most evident that this is not a job for Kay but a true vocation .Kay ensures each puppy /dog is catered for their uniqueness therefore classes are not turning out robots but happy individual dogs with their own personalities remaining in tact. We will always remain with Kay I don’t believe training will cease but is an ongoing transition . I do not think Douglas would be the puppy he is today without the patience of Kay and all other attendees and their dogs /puppies , there is lots of support within the groups . I think also the tentatively delivered training I have learnt from Kay I have been able to pass onto my two small grandchildren who manage a rather large Douglas most capably and there is mutual respect again this I feel is a huge achievement ! I often ponder on how I would have managed with the size he is now without Kay’s and other dogs and their owners patience , I believe had Douglas and I not attended the story may have been very different !!! I would recommend Top dog and Kay’s style of training to anyone and I believe one has to think about how you would like your puppy to be as an adult and our journey with Kay will continue .
Top Dog has helped me with my headstrong pup and between the advice, traing tools and 1-to-1 sessions we have turned him into a calm and confident dog who is enjoying his weekly manners and scent classes. I full recommend Top Dog to everyone, whether you feel your Dog needs training or not. Kay has helped me to see that even the small wins are to be celebrated and that persistence truly pays off.
Absolutely brilliant training. Felt very overwhelmed after adopting our alsation rottie(?) mix Nala, the classes are great, Kay still finds time to interact with all the dogs and answer any questions we have, all the fellow class mates are welcoming and we all have a great supportive atmosphere. I really appreciate how Kay doesn't make training sound like it should always be straightforward and easy, puppies can be hard work, and its good to have strong support to celebrate all the wins, and hear experiences from the other owners about how hard work pays off, its so satifying when you hit that breakthrough with training. It takes a village to raise a kid, but it takes Top Dog to raise a puppy!
I highly recommend Top Dog. Kay is a fantastic trainer, very patient, supportive and highly knowledgeable. The classes are fun and friendly.
Alfie (my Jack Russell Cross) has, and still is making fantastic progress.
We have learnt many tricks such as stretch, middle, play dead and sit pretty. I'm currently working on getting Alfie to skip rope with me.
I have been given many tools to get Alfie to heal and his recall is progressing very well. I have also learnt a lot about how to read my Alfie as well as other dogs.
I could waffle on, but basically very very good classes, come along you won't regret it.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I currently attend the Tuesday Good Manners class with my XL Bully, Willow, and the Sunday Good Manners class with my Staffy cross puppy, Harley — and I can’t recommend Top Dog Training Academy enough!
Willow originally started with one-to-one sessions to help with muzzle training and to build her confidence. Kay worked closely with us on refocusing, engagement, and staying calm. Thanks to her support and knowledge, Willow is now comfortable joining group classes with other dogs, and we’re continuing to work on reducing distractions and improving her calmness around others. The progress she’s made is incredible!
Harley has been going to classes since she was just 12 weeks old and is now a confident 7-month-old pup. The structured socialisation and desensitisation in a calm, controlled environment has helped her become the friendly, well-balanced dog she is growing into.
Kay is patient, supportive, and really understands how to bring out the best in each dog. Both of my dogs absolutely love going — their excitement says it all!
If you’re looking for a professional, positive, and welcoming dog training school, I highly recommend Top Dog Training Academy. It’s made such a difference to both of my dogs and to our day-to-day life together.
I could not be happier with Top Dog! My dog, Ella, is a rescue who has some challenges associated with her background. I have been taking her to Top Dog classes from almost day one, and I can honestly say that she is thriving! Ella has gone from being a scared, reactive dog, incapable of being within a quarter-mile of other dogs without having a meltdown, to a confident dog who participates in group classes twice a week. With the support of Kay and the wonderful community she has created, Ella and I have built a strong, trusting relationship, which forms the foundation for everything else we do. Top Dog lessons are so much more than obedience classes - there is a real focus on the physical and mental wellbeing of each dog, and a true appreciation that dogs are not robots, and that every dog is different, so not every method will work for every dog... As Kay says, "train the dog in front of you". Even within group lessons, each person receives personalised teaching, tailored specifically to helping their own dog succeed, made possible because Kay gets to know each dog individually, and builds a fantastic relationship with each dog, getting to know their background and their personality (and the dogs love her! Honestly, you should see the dogs' reactions when Kay arrives to class - she has a real fanclub!). In addition to Good Manners classes, we also attend Scent Detection classes. Initially these were recommended to us as a way to help Ella learn to slow down and actually interact with her environment rather than just react to it, and I can't believe how much they have helped (bonus points, Ella loves it!) We travel all over the place with our classes, learning not only the content of the lesson itself, but also how to be and behave in the real world. Top Dog is more than just a class, it is a community - we celebrate each others wins, support each others difficulties, and work together to give our dogs the best possible chance of success.
Hi am looking at starting dog training for my puppy at the end of November when she is able to go out . Winnie is a French bulldog.
Many Thanks
Andy
Hi just wondering how much it is for puppy training
Me and my dog attend Good Manners Group. It’s a lovely group. Very friendly, informative, supportive and effective. Would definitely recommend.
We started training for Scent Hurdles last month and not only is it great fun it helps to focus my dog's energy. Both Kay and Bev are professional in all of the classes they offer.
I've been training with Top Dog for 18 months to help my dog achieve calmness. We do the Good Manners class and the improvement has been incredible! The patience shown towards both me and my dog is second to none. I have recommended Kay and Bev to all of my colleagues.
Amazing and professional training with expert attention to detail and caring for every type of breed.
